Let’s be honest…from the beginning of January up until the very end of November, most of us keep our holiday spirit on lockdown, but come December, that all changes. Finally, after months and months of waiting, it is socially acceptable to deck the halls with boughs of holly, dream of a white Christmas and sing about our love of Christmas trees.

Speaking of Christmas trees, where in the world (or New Jersey) can the family participate in the old holiday tradition of going to a farm and chopping down the perfect tree? Luckily for you, DSM has researched Christmas tree farms all around New Jersey and narrowed down the best farms in the area to make it easy for you to pick the perfect tree this holiday season!

Before you begin your search for the greatest Christmas tree of all time, we recommend reading over these tips to avoid feeling like Scrooge.

  • Start your search for the perfect tree as early as possible. Because of the high demand for Christmas trees during this time of year, many farms around NJ close once they officially run out of trees. (Better to be safe than sorry!)
  • Call ahead. Before you cram the kids into the family minivan, we’d recommend calling the farm beforehand to assure that they are still open for business. A lot of Christmas tree farms in NJ haven’t gotten the hang of this whole digital thing yet, meaning they don’t update their webpages regularly with their most up-to-date information.
  • Don’t even think about bringing power or chainsaws to any of these farms. While some Christmas tree farms may allow for you to bring your own saw, most provide saws there for you to utilize.
  • When/if cutting your own tree, without the help of a professional, be sure to cut as low to the ground as humanly possible.
  • Once the tree has safely made it to its final destination (your house), submerge the tree in warm water immediately and consistently maintain the amount of water surrounding the tree’s stump or be faced with loads of prickly little needles around the house!

***Please note that some counties in NJ, such as Bergen County and Hudson County, are extremely densely populated and do not have the space to have Christmas tree farms. In these areas, it is more common to find Christmas tree lots with pre-cut trees available to be picked up***
